BIO – VIRGIL SEGAL

Virgil Segal is a French artist who has always been turned toward the horizon, with a career—and an identity— spread across several continents.

After 30 years of live experience — from Boston to São Paulo, via Montreal, Vienna (Austria), and finally Berlin — he finally releases his first EP, Noir et blanc, in May 2026 at the age of 53, a blend of Chanson and Jazz with Brazilian and Rock influences.

He has collaborated with, among others, Matt Herskowitz (USA) and Alegre Corrêa (BR, Zawinul Syndicate). A rock guitarist in Boston and a sound engineer in NYC, his work has taken him from concert halls to jazz clubs, and to festivals both small and large (CIA 2015, Costa Rica).

His debut EP (released in May 2026) reveals a vibrant artist, somewhere between a less polished Madeleine Peyroux and a sober Gainsbourg.
The single “À Britta” is immediately added to international playlists (UK, Japan, Austria) and achieves an exceptional save rate.

With MuKiBa!® (2018), Virgil shares his passion for music with parents and children.

With Segal Music, he returns to music for adults (two signings in 2024, as a manager and jazz producer).

EP “Noir et blanc” – RELEASE PRESS TEXT

Genre/Sub-genre: Chanson-Jazz / French-Pop
Artist: Virgil Segal
Title: “Noir et blanc”
Single: “À Britta”
Format: EP (4 titles – 5 tracks – 3 compositions)
Release date: May 2026
Label: Segal Music

Virgil Segal’s debut EP, with its rare and vibrant organicity (no click, thank you), is a dam bursting open. The harbinger of a new chapter. The prescience of a long-sought cohesion finally achieved.

Fifteen years separate the duo version of “Adieu” with Alegre Corrêa in Vienna (2009) from a spontaneous session in Kreuzberg (2017). Blending jazz, rock, and Brazilian music, this is the assimilation of diverse cultures and styles, digested into an international and hybrid Jazz-meets-Brazil-meets-Rock French-pop cocktail.

Track comments:

  • “À Britta” (V. Segal) — a reflection on the challenges and contradictions of grounding oneself in the present, the need to “cast the future far ahead,” the twists of fate, regrets, and wistfulness.

Surprising anecdote: this track was composed in Vienna in 2007, nearly 15 years before meeting Britta in Berlin, during a tango class. A “head-scratcher” of a song in terms of its lyrics, though the harmony and melody remain simple and restrained.
  • “Noir et blanc” (V. Segal) — a bossa nova with a nostalgic look back at a past relationship, like the languid contemplation of a good old black-and-white film.
  •  “Adieu” (V. Segal) — a song with sophisticated harmonies, wavering between the idea of following the path together (as a pair: “à deux”) or saying goodbye (“Adieu”) The song sadly modulates down a semitone after each chorus. The EP offers two versions of this track: a duo version recorded in 2009 in Vienna with Alegre Corrêa (BR, Zawinul Syndicate) – whose enthusiasm for the song was such an incredible gift to me – and the 2017 version.
  • “Darn That Dream” (Jimmy Van Heusen, Eddie DeLange) — the only standard on the EP, the famous jazz classic.

Note: This EP must still get consolidated, as two tracks were published before the rest of the EP.
